Context

“God and His Kingdom” is an SRE curriculum developed to fit in the SRE program delivered to Narrabri High School. At Narrabri High School SRE is delivered to Year 7 and Year 8 over three one-hour lessons each year. Most available SRE curriculums available at the time of writing are designed for weekly SRE programs delivered over a full school year.

“God and His Kingdom” has been developed to provide an overview of the whole story of the bible over just three hours. The structure of the program has been developed utilising the work of Vaughan Roberts in his book God’s Big Picture. The purpose of “God and His Kingdom” is to present the bible as one continuing story. It encourages the students to consider humanity’s place in the metanarrative of the bible.

 

Objectives:

  • This curriculum aims to present the bible to the students as one complete story about the kingdom of God.

  • The class will be presented with how humanity fits into the bible story.

  • The class will be presented with multiple illustrations to demonstrate how the plan of salvation operates.

 

Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to describe the metanarrative of the bible in terms of God’s Kingdom

  • Students will be able to identify the key stages in the Kingdom metanarrative

  • Students will be able to discuss God’s plan throughout history as presented by the bible

Scope and Sequence

Over the course of three lessons “God and His Kingdom” presents the story of the bible in terms of God’s kingdom.

 

Lesson One: Kingdom Design

            Key Passages: Genesis 1 & 2

            Lesson One speaks about the creation of the world as being God’s good creation. It presents the Garden of Eden as being the Pattern of God’s Kingdom. Humans dwelling in harmony with God in His creation is presented as the world how it is meant to be.

           

Lesson Two: Kingdom Perished and Kingdom Restoration

            Key Passages: Genesis 3, Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23

            Lesson Two identifies the reason why the world is not as God had created it in Genesis 1 and 2. Based on Genesis 3 and 4, lesson two identifies that rebellion against God is the reason the kingdom pattern has perished. The second half of this lesson presents the class with God’s plan to restore the kingdom. The class will consider the promises made to Israel to send a Messiah to deliver them and restore the Kingdom.

 

Lesson Three: Kingdom Being Realised

            Key Passages: John 14:1-4, Revelation 21:18-22:5

            Assesses where humanity is currently in relation to God’s plan for His Kingdom. This lesson presents the class with the concept that Jesus is enthroned as King. This lesson also presents that the full kingdom of God is still in the process of being realised. The class will be presented with descriptions of the perfected Kingdom as revealed in Revelations.
